Action Breakdown #2: Facial Hair

The Action Breakdown this week is going to take a look into a very minor, but yet important detail regarding the action hero. Facial hair. Whether it’s a beard, moustache, handle-bar, or stubble, facial hair is always indicative of a man on a mission. While being clean-shaven doesn’t hinder a person’s ability to be intimidating, adding some type of facial hair will definitely boost his persona up.

Look at some of these characters and tell me if they don’t  look awesome without some signature face hair:

Hans Gruber: The ultimate action villain. The man where every villain in an action movie is compared to. Alan Rickman’s acting was awesome, but his look is also very memorable. His scowl along with the full on Hollywoodian makes him standout more and adds on to an already menacing character.

Every Jason Statham Character: Statham and his signature stubble. It’s almost like it is permanently there. It has become so much a part of him that if he ever shaved the world would go into chaos. The badass quotient is always raised when he’s on screen and most of it comes from the look.

Neal McCauley: Robert DeNiro’s Van Dyke is the stuff of legend and along with his cool demeanor he is just a great character all around. There is just something about the sunglasses and Van Dyke that just goes perfect.

There are plenty of other examples, but you get the gist of it. Facial hair just is a given for an action hero. It adds mystery, grittiness, and a sense of a guy you don’t want to mess with that helps create a memorable character.

About the Author

My name is Omar and I love action movies. I grew up loving action films thanks in part to my father who would deliver a healthy dose of Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Willis, and Seagal in my movie diet. Ever since then, I continue to love the genre more and more and go along perfectly with my love for the horror genre. What other movie genre can specialize in giving you pure adrenaline and excitement in every turn?
