Action Breakdown #4: Explosions

Explosions. One of the Holy Grails of action movies. Every action movie needs them even if they aren’t relevant. Explosions and action are practically conjoined by the hip with one another. On this edition of the Action Breakdown, we are going to take a look at explosions and why we love them so much.

Destruction: The number one thing we love about explosions is of course the destruction. A big ball of fire racing through a building or a street and just obliterating everything it touches. Michael Bay is the professor of just destroying everything with explosions. His movies might be shite at times, but does he know how to blow shit up or what?

The Slow Motion Walk From the Explosion: One of the best clichés to come out of this category. The slow motion action walk. Con Air loves this cliché so much it does it twice for the hero and villain. It is just so badass to just walk away from an explosion like its nothing to blink your eye at. Or running in cool slow-mo.

Best Explosions: What are some of the best explosions in action history? The hospital explosion from The Dark Knight. The ending to Die Hard. The ending to Return of the Jedi. The Death Star of course. That one explosion in Stealth inside the hangar. Cyberdyne exploding in Terminator 2, and so many more.

So what are some of your favorite movie explosions?

Man, explosions are just a lot of fun. Makes me feel fuzzy inside. Well, that’s another installment of the Action Breakdown. See all of you next week.

About the Author

My name is Omar and I love action movies. I grew up loving action films thanks in part to my father who would deliver a healthy dose of Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Willis, and Seagal in my movie diet. Ever since then, I continue to love the genre more and more and go along perfectly with my love for the horror genre. What other movie genre can specialize in giving you pure adrenaline and excitement in every turn?
