Action Breakdown #8: Cop Buddies

We know them. We love them and tolerate them at the same time. The yin to the yang. The peanut butter to the jelly. The Powell to his McClane. The action buddy. The duo who will stop at nothing to stop the bad guy from getting away while causing as much destruction as possible and getting bitched at by the captain. We will take a look at some the most famous cop duos and what is needed to create the best possible duo.

The Odd Couple Dynamic: In order for a cop buddy duo to work, they have to be polar opposites. Whether one is by the books and the other is a wild psycho, an age difference, or different lifestyles. They have to be different in order to have that “Odd Couple” effect in order to increase the tension and comedy when needed. No duo personifies that more than Riggs and Murtaugh. Opposites in almost every way, their dynamic works perfectly because of those differences. The comedy is also amped up thanks to the situations they always seem to get themselves in.

Common Enemy: Whether its Tango & Cash facing Jack Palance or Riggs and Murtaugh facing South African drug dealers, they have that common enemy in order to enforce that bond. It provides them that common thread that holds them together and will lead to many badass moments of ass kicking.

Best Examples: Carter and Lee (Rush Hour), Butterman and Angel (Hot Fuzz), Pappas and Utah (Point Break), and Lowery and Burnett (Bad Boys).

So remember kids, the best partner you can have to fight bad guys may be that disgusting slob or the 65 year old veteran.

About the Author

My name is Omar and I love action movies. I grew up loving action films thanks in part to my father who would deliver a healthy dose of Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Willis, and Seagal in my movie diet. Ever since then, I continue to love the genre more and more and go along perfectly with my love for the horror genre. What other movie genre can specialize in giving you pure adrenaline and excitement in every turn?
