Action Breakdown #9: The One-Liner

We all say them at work or around friends. We even say it to ourselves when the time asks for them. One of the biggest staples of an action movie and almost Shakespearean in its delivery. The one liner. Everyone gets one even villains get a one liner as well. People think that one liners are easy to create, but they are wrong, kind sir. One liners are an art form. One that takes time and effort in creating and perfecting in order for it to be the best parting line to your most hated foe.

PUNS: One of the main requisites of one liners are puns. Puns make up the punch line for the one liner. It can also be a warped view of something common that can be used to be spun around towards the person you’re saying it to. “You’re a disease and I’m the cure” is a perfect spin on medical terminology and dammit is it a cool one liner from Cobra. “Always bet on black” is another perfect example of mixing gambling and race. It is rather genius when you think about it.

Insult your Victim: Make sure you always insult the man you are going to kill or have just killed in your one liner. Whether it is Payne “losing his head” in Speed and Jack telling him that he’s taller or John Matrix referring to his kidnapper as to being “dead tired” after snapping his neck, always insult your victim with a witty comeback.

One Liner Professors: For anyone who wants to learn the art of the one liner, look no further than Arnold Schwarzenegger, Carl Weathers, Sylvester Stallone, Kurt Russell, and Wesley Snipes.

Well there you have. Now go my pupils. Go and apply this knowledge to the world.

About the Author

My name is Omar and I love action movies. I grew up loving action films thanks in part to my father who would deliver a healthy dose of Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Willis, and Seagal in my movie diet. Ever since then, I continue to love the genre more and more and go along perfectly with my love for the horror genre. What other movie genre can specialize in giving you pure adrenaline and excitement in every turn?
