Blitz vs. Killer Elite

We all know The Stath is pretty much THE action star these days but he’s yet to find that one movie (outside of the Expendables) which will make a huge amount of cash. Last year he starred in the old school action thriller Blitz and the falsely advertised Killer Elite.

Blitz was a modern Dirty Harry/Death Wish and that is my favourite genre of action movie. Great bad guy (Aiden Gillen), great script and just an all round great flick. It SHOULD have made a load of money at the box office but was denied a cinema release, after all why release a grown up action movie when you can have poorly animated chipmunks on screen instead? *sits in the corner and sobs for 10 minutes*

OK, I’m back. So yeah, Blitz was the kinda movie Jason Statham should be doing, a badass, politically incorrect cop flick with plenty of one liners to spare. I think the character of Brant could easily have had a franchise, but it looks like it isn’t meant to be.

Killer Elite:  Another R Rated action movie was, however a very different beast altogether. In the trailers we were promised that it would indeed rock us like a hurricane. I came out of the cinema after watching it, but I’m afraid I was not rocked like a hurricane but more a mild gas pain. It was an entertaining enough spy thriller, but it wasn’t the 80’s style actioner we all expected. It was made to look like Clive Owen was this evil bastard and the movie was gonna be filled with one liners and ass-kickery…nope. It was a far more intelligent movie than was advertised but it wasn’t what the audience wanted and therefore it died at the box office. The characters and the script were forgettable and upon a second viewing I really wasn’t much of a fan at all.

So, I think you can guess which movie I prefer: BLITZ! Easily one of the best actioners of 2011 and it should have been a much bigger success. Gritty, violent but also with plenty of humour to boot. In fact, pardon me while I stick the Blu Ray on…

Legends of Action: Jason Statham

Today is Jason Statham’s 48th birthday so I thought as a tribute I’d update his Legends of Action post for 2015. Jason Statham was a former swimmer and street hustler; discovered by Guy Ritchie, who gave him his fir...

Re-Action: Death Race 2000 (1975) vs. Death Race (2008)

Remake.  It’s a very dirty word for film fans everywhere.  I don’t mind it so much, as, let’s be honest, it’s become a film type all its own. Now, everyone will tell you that the original is always better.  That’s ...
