Legends of Action: Shane Black

Shane Black is the screenwriter of so many classic actioners from the Lethal Weapon movies to The Long Kiss Goodnight, The Last Boy Scout, Kiss Kiss Bang Bang, The Monster Squad and The Last Action Hero (I enjoy this movie despite the fact it actually killed the genre in a way).

Mr. Black has a great way with dialogue and I consider him my greatest role model when it comes to writing action movies. There really isn’t anyone else out there just now who can match him in terms of witty dialogue and great action set-pieces.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang has one of the best scripts of recent times and is painfully underrated; My cousin describes it as a “writer’s movie” and perhaps he’s right. Any writers I know love the crisp dialogue and the two leads Robert Downey Jr. & Val Kilmer give practically career best performances. It’s not really an action movie, more of a Noir piece but that doesn’t matter as it is still excellent.

The Last Boy Scout is another underrated classic and I consider it Bruce Willis’ best movie alongside Die Hard. He has never been cooler than in this movie and there are so many one-liners that you pick up something new with every viewing.

The first Lethal Weapon remains my favourite as the characters were new and fresh, before it became a parody of itself with all the sequels. I will point out that I love all 4 Weapon movies though.

Black’s next movie is Iron Man 3 which I am now really looking forward to, I wasn’t overly impressed by the second movie and think that with Black on board, the dialogue will be sharp as a tack. Now all we need is Val Kilmer to make an appearance and we’ll have ourselves a classic.

If I could ever become half the writer Mr. Black is I would consider myself honoured.

I grew up watching JCVD, Sly and Arnold destroy bad guys, blow things up and spew one-liners like it's a fashion statement. Action is everything I go to the movies for and the reason I came up with this site is to share my love for the genre with everyone.
