No Respect at All: Westerns

The action genre has plenty of subgenres within that offers multiple avenues of entertainment. Buddy cop action movies, war movies, disaster movies, action horror, and so on. However, one of the oldest and most respected of these subgenres (or genre more accurately speaking) would be the Western. Sadly, westerns are very rare and do not come across quite as often as they used to back in the early days of cinema and the era of the “Spaghetti Westerns”.

Westerns have contributed a lot to the action genre as we know it today. The gruff and tough loner hero, the anti-hero, shootouts, stand-offs, and many other trademarks that we see in all action movies currently owe a lot to westerns. So why are they so rare to make nowadays? Aside from obvious problems (people aren’t interested in westerns), I guess it is the problem in making up worthy stories for a great western film to be based on. I can’t see the problem in making a story for a western. If they can still keep Resident Evil going, then why not create a western franchise?

It is sad to see this genre die a slow death and just be forgotten by the general public. These films provide some of the best characters and shootouts in movie history. I think it is time for this genre to come back.

About the Author

My name is Omar and I love action movies. I grew up loving action films thanks in part to my father who would deliver a healthy dose of Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Willis, and Seagal in my movie diet. Ever since then, I continue to love the genre more and more and go along perfectly with my love for the horror genre. What other movie genre can specialize in giving you pure adrenaline and excitement in every turn?
