Scott Free

My day job has been too busy lately so I haven’t been able to write much, so I’m trying to make up for it tonight.

I’ve talked a lot about great producers who have made some classic actioners but now I am going to talk about my favourite Directors.

I can’t decide which Scott brother I prefer, so I am saying both. Ridley makes the more cerebral fare like Blade Runner, Gladiator, Alien, Thelma & Louise, etc. Some of his movies have been hit and miss and yet he still remains my favourite director as he’s never afraid to do something different. I think he can do any genre and every film he makes is at least, visually amazing.

I think he has actually become a better director as he’s gotten older. Everyone says Blade Runner and Alien are his Masterpieces but for me it’s all about Gladiator. That movie was absolutey brilliant and really cemented Russell Crowe as a mainstream actor, despite the fact he didn’t really want to do mainstream movies. They have since worked together on a load of movies which have varied in quality (I still love “A Good Year” despite what everyone thinks). The pacing on Ridley’s older films is a bit off, the original Alien is, I’m afraid bloody boring in places but still a great movie.

Kingdom Of Heaven, although butchered by the studio upon intial release was blessed with one of the best Director’s Cut’s of all time. I truly adore it and think everyone should see it and own the soundtrack. The music is fabulous and really captures the mood and atmosphere of the film.

Now Ridley’s brother Tony is the balls-to-the-wall action director: Top Gun, Crimson Tide, The Last Boy Scout, True Romance, Domino, Deja Vu, Days Of Thunder, Enemy Of the State, Unstoppable and more. Tony makes the more commercial movies and is arguably the more successful director (at least in terms of box office). The Last Boy Scout has become a cult classic and deservedly so, written by my idol Shane Black and directed with great panache by Tony, it remains my favourite film of his alongside True Romance and Top Gun.

Overall, Ridley and Tony Scott have (combined) made some of my all time favourite movies and the only other person I think who comes even remotely close could be Christopher Nolan. But that’s for another day…
