The Life of a Henchman

Action henchmen get a bad rap. They’re usually just viewed as that guy who got shot in the head at point blank range or that guy who was used as a human meat shield. However, henchmen provide so much more than just fodder to our one man army protagonist. Henchmen provide some of the best characters in a movie and some have even made a career out of it. Henchmen seem to be the unspoken heroes of the action movie genre. Yes, they are expendable and usually don’t offer much else than shoot and die, but they sure as hell provide plenty of great moments.

Al Leong is probably the Clint Eastwood of henchmen. He has starred in countless action movies playing the henchman to the main villain. His resume rivals some action stars with movies like Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, Death Warrant, and Action Jackson. His status as henchman is legendary.

Gary Busey is probably one of the most memorable for how insane he is. His fight scene with Riggs at the end of the movie is evidence enough of what a great henchman he is. Sully from Commando is probably one of my favorites because he pretty much is the scummy and cocky henchman that you really want to see bite it big time when the time comes.

Henchmen is the milk to the villain’s chocolate pie. They provide that link of action throughout the movie in order to provide the much needed action and to help build up to the great climax between the hero and the villain. So here’s to those guys who on a bad guy’s payroll to point, shoot, and die when needed.

About the Author

My name is Omar and I love action movies. I grew up loving action films thanks in part to my father who would deliver a healthy dose of Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Willis, and Seagal in my movie diet. Ever since then, I continue to love the genre more and more and go along perfectly with my love for the horror genre. What other movie genre can specialize in giving you pure adrenaline and excitement in every turn?
