The Next Big Action Director

We all like to discuss as to who will carry the torch once Stallone, Schwarzenegger, and Willis move on from action films or retire. However, we never discuss who will take the reins of the directorial duties of providing action to the multiplexes in the upcoming years. In the past, we had names like Richard Donner, John McTiernan, Jan de Bont, John Woo, Guy Ritchie, and Walter Hill take the reigns as the visionaries to bring great action movies to theaters.

But who are the next up and coming directors of the action genre?

Many names come to mind in regards to the new wave of action directors.

Isaac Florentine (Undisputed 2 & 3) is a promising director who did the impossible and made a relevant series of direct to DVD movies with a huge following and made a star out of Scott Adkins. Zack Snyder is one of the biggest action directors right now with hits like 300, Watchmen, and the upcoming Man of Steel. He has an interesting visual style and delivers some epic sequences and he can be a big player in the future. Michael Bay is already an established name, but his career is far from over. Just step away from the Transformers and give me more movies like Bad Boys or The Rock. Jonathan Liebesman is another director to look out in the genre as well. With his recent films like Battle: LA and Wrath of the Titans, he seems to have his niche after some time in the horror genre. Peter Berg is certainly one that is overlooked a lot of times, but he has done some great action movies like The Rundown and The Kingdom. Neveldine/Taylor are some of my favorite action directors out right now. Their visual style is so kinetic that it is hard to lose interest and with films like the Crank movies and Gamer, they are here to stay. Christopher Nolan is probably one of the best right now with his well thought out stories along with his penchant for old school filmmaking in his action scenes. Plus, he made Batman a total badass and ingrained him into a realistic setting which isn’t easy to accomplish.

So there is plenty of promising talent out there right now to take the reins of the action genre into different and more interesting places. Who are some of your favorite new action directors?

About the Author

My name is Omar and I love action movies. I grew up loving action films thanks in part to my father who would deliver a healthy dose of Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Willis, and Seagal in my movie diet. Ever since then, I continue to love the genre more and more and go along perfectly with my love for the horror genre. What other movie genre can specialize in giving you pure adrenaline and excitement in every turn?
