Whatever Happened to John Woo?

I was always a huge fan of Mr. Woo’s movies, the balletic violence, the slow mo and the over use of doves and pigeons. His movies were so stylish: Hard Boiled, The Killer, Face/Off, Hard Target, Broken Arrow and M:I-2 are all entertaining as hell. Then he made Windtalkers and that was the last I heard of him. He was a director who could shoot an action scene, no shaky cam or cgi. Just great looking action scenes and cool badasses.

I guess it’s because he made good R-Rated action movies and now that the general public are a bunch of PG-13 loving candy asses then there wasn’t a market anymore. Sigh, as Nite Owl says, these things go in cycles, soon people will be bored with superhero movies, etc and the old school actioner will make a comeback… at least I hope so.

Once this happens I’m hoping to see John Woo make a good old fashioned actioner again.  Mission: Impossible 2 gets a lot of abuse but I think it rocks, that motorbike chase and the final punch up are awesome, it’s easily the best of the 3 in my opinion. I also love Hard Target despite the fact it’s basically a Levi’s commercial.

The action scenes are epic especially the last half hour. John Woo’s films always finish with the best action scenes in the business, complete carnage.

Overall, I miss John Woo’s action pictures and hope he makes a comeback soon.
