Will the Real Action Heroines Please Stand Up?

Female action heroines seem to be a rare breed these days. Sure, one can make the argument of Alice (Resident Evil) or Selene (Underworld) as our modern day heroines, but there is a problem. While they can kick ass and look hot in their own right, I’m leaning more towards the non-sexualized tough as nails action heroine like Sarah Connor and Ripley. Sexuality can still be a factor, but it isn’t a priority more so than the character and her penchant to kick as much ass as possible. It seems like characters like Ripley have all but disappeared. The most recent attempt at this is probably Gina Carano’s role in Haywire as a female assassin. We need more actresses in tougher and leaner action roles that require more than just show some ass and some flashy moves.

Down and dirty and right in the action is where women can be in action movies. Kelly Hu in The Tournament is a great example of a great female character in a hardcore action movie. She still had the sexy side, but enough showcase of fighting and weapon skills to not make her into masturbation fodder. Directors need to give those kinds of strong female roles a welcome back into the cinemas. It can bring a gust of fresh air into the genre and open up many possibilities for new characters and stories.

About the Author

My name is Omar and I love action movies. I grew up loving action films thanks in part to my father who would deliver a healthy dose of Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Willis, and Seagal in my movie diet. Ever since then, I continue to love the genre more and more and go along perfectly with my love for the horror genre. What other movie genre can specialize in giving you pure adrenaline and excitement in every turn?
