Wrestlers and Action Movies

I’ve always been a wrestling fan. Wrestlers usually tend to be a child’s first role models like how superheroes can be for a comic book reader. I’ve been a fan since 2000 and I have seen most wrestlers make the transition to the big screen. This transition usually lands within the action genre and it is an appropriate one. Wrestlers are already buff and kicking people’s asses so why not cast them in an action movie. I’m of the opinion that wrestlers can be a wealth of action badassery when used properly and there have been some great examples all around.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is the first person to come to mind regarding wrestlers and action. His films like The Rundown, Faster, and Fast Five have proven that he can handle a big budget action picture. He has the look and the charisma to be a great action star. Unfortunately, he has fallen curse to the Disney/kid friendly hand and it doesn’t seem to be stopping. Here’s hoping G.I. Joe 2 can correct that.

“Stone Cold” Steve Austin is another man who fits perfectly within the action genre. I’ve only seen The Condemned, but he definitely has the chops and the gritty look.

John Cena is a man that is both hated and loved within the wrestling community. His movies, however, are fairly easy to distinguish. The Marine was ok, but 12 Rounds was an abomination. Boring, cliché, and unexciting. Cena has the physique, but doesn’t have the charisma that an Austin or Johnson has.

Jesse “The Body” Ventura will forever live in greatness for his role as tough as nails Blain. A true action star.

Hulk Hogan was more kids fare, but he also had potential. But that’s another blog for another time.

What about today’s current stars? Guys like CM Punk and others definitely have the chops for an action role. Hell, even women like Natayla and Beth Phoenix can be some kickass female leading characters when given the right role. I say look at the WWE, TNA and other organizations. You never know who you might find.

About the Author

Omar
My name is Omar and I love action movies. I grew up loving action films thanks in part to my father who would deliver a healthy dose of Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Willis, and Seagal in my movie diet. Ever since then, I continue to love the genre more and more and go along perfectly with my love for the horror genre. What other movie genre can specialize in giving you pure adrenaline and excitement in every turn?
