Action Breakdown #15: Action Movie Marketing

All movies have a certain style of marketing in order to get butts in the seats of the cineplex. Horror movies emphasize on scares and gore, comedies focus on the comedians and the wacky antics, and dramas focus on great actors and sad stories. Of course, action movies have their own distinct method to get our asses in seats by any means necessary. What does it take to get a guy like me to see an action movie in the theaters risking the annoying teenagers, crying babies, and obnoxious cellphone callers? Let’s see:

The Hero: Like any movie genre, they each have their select few actors that you know are guaranteed to do wha tthey do best and guarantee money at the box office. Compare John Carter featuring Taylor Kitsch with something like Jason Statham in Safe. Action junkies will flock to the Statham film because it’s Statham. We don’t know jack of Kitsch and they will promote the hell out of Statham being in Safe. It’s simple. Even if the movie looks horrible, you will watch anything with Van Damme or Stallone in it. All about drawpower.

Awesome Posters: You can’t convince us to go see an action movie without a great poster do you? Posters like Die Hard, Speed, Sudden Death, They Live, Crank, and The Expendables 2 all feature what we want and will get. Emphasis on explosions and things flying about helps. A shot of the hero looking badass with a gun really bumps it up twelve notches. No floating heads or generic guy looking into the distance stuff. I mean hardcore Statham pointing a gun in your face kind of deal.


Money Shots: All action trailers need the money shots. Whether it’s McClane diving off the side of a building, Schwarzenegger twirling the shotgun and firing, or just seeing Willis, Schwarzenegger, and Stallone talking to each other, just present along with some bombastic music.


Catchy Tagline: How can you beat a tagline like “Crime is a disease. Meet the cure” or “He’s in town with a few days to kill.”. Action movies should have a tagline that pops out when people read it. It helps if it’s a pun on the actual movie. Puns and action go hand in hand.

Just remember these steps when promoting your very own action movie and you’ll be sure to rake in the dough.
