Action heroes aren’t always lone wolf types who drink their pain away. They are sometimes normal everyday fathers and husbands just living day by day with the usual family troubles. It seems every action movie hero has a certain formula regarding their families and how they must act. So let’s take a look through the action family album and reminisce on the good and bad:
The Wife: The better half or sometimes the rotten apple. She is the one who either supports our hero or just utterly despises him with a burning passion. Most of the time our hero is either divorced or having problems with the wife. You don’t expect to kill a bunch of bad guys without some repercussion from the spouse? Unless she gets kidnapped or something. Then it’s fair game. Easy how the wife that divorces our protagonist for being trigger happy becomes madly in love with him again for that exact same reason. I’m looking at you Famke Janssen in Taken!!!!!
The Daughter: There are two universal rules when it comes to the action hero daughter. If she’s younger than 12, then she will be the crying and yelling type of daughter. Maybe she’ll be Danielle Harris in The Last Boy Scout kind of badass or Dakota Fanning type annoying. If she’s older than say 18 or so, she’ll be a supermodel. I’m talking grade A hotness. It’s almost a guarantee. Those action heroes have good genes.
The Son: Again, the son applies the same rules of the daughter in a different way. For the younger version, he’s going to be the whiny kid. The older version is going to have him be the cocky brash son. Thinking he can diss his father because he can grow some facial hair. HA! You wish you were as awesome as your father.
Miscellaneous Family: Other family members like uncles, aunts, grandfathers, and others mostly either serve as the ones that give the hero a much needed pep talk to get their spirits up, a safe haven until the heat dies down, or the one who will supply our hero with an insane amount of weapons. It’s good to see a family that cares.
Basically, having a family while serving up a plate of action can be both a blessing and a curse. Just gotta learn to live with it. Much like real life.
