Hand to Hand Combat

I enjoy few things more than watching one man beating the living crap out of a group of bad guys and then the ultimate battle between the hero and villain at a film’s climax.

But what is it that’s so appealing about hand to hand combat?

For me, it’s a primal thing, man stripped down to his essence; no weapons, no car chases just blind hatred and badassery. You can blow up all the stuff you want, but for me nothing beats a good fight.

Whenever you’ve got a bunch of brainless gang-members who are picking a fight with the wrong guy, there is nothing more satisfying than watching them get hurt… bad! Even worse, when someone is hurting a woman or child; that’s red rag to bull time. Kick his ass, Seabass!

This has been in mankind’s DNA since we began. The gladiators in Rome would kill for entertainment and the crowds would cheer while these two warriors would battle. Martial Arts/MMA/UFC and action movies are today’s versions of the gladiators. We will always pay to watch 2 men hurt each other because it’s our natural instincts. We try to suppress these instincts but deep down, we all have it in us.

Martial arts movies and fight scenes are wish-fulfillment; we all wish we were badasses and could beat up a group of goons, because in real life you’d probably end up dead or close to it.

It’s about standing up to the bully and showing him that he can’t push you around.

I was watching Dragon Eyes earlier and in the opening scene in the prison where Cung Le is sitting minding his own business and some fat, bald sumbitch starts to beat up on him. You’re shouting at the screen and then Van Damme casually comes in and kicks the hell out of said fat, bald sumbitch. I was cheering and that’s what it’s all about; the satisfaction of watching bad people get what they deserve!

It’s not just that though, watching someone like Scott Adkins fight in the Undisputed movies; you’re in awe of the physical prowess and dedication you must have to be THAT fit. It’s also just a helluva lot of fun as well… wait, did you just spill my pint?
