Hollywood Ain’t the Problem… You Are!

We all love to bitch and moan about remakes, how the Action, Sci-Fi and Western genres are dying out, etc. However, sometimes I feel like we’re banging our heads against a brick wall. The reason for the rant today? The Expendables 2’s box office failure. Sure it may make money internationally but what happened to you America? You used to be so cool. The masters of the action movie; then this year we get every action star that matters together in the one film and it was easily the best actioner of 2012.

So far it’s on target to get out-grossed by Battleship, that’s right BLOODY BATTLESHIP! One of the worst films of the year!

The Expendables 2 is the action movie we’ve been wanting to see for years and a vast improvement over the flawed original. It will be lucky to even reclaim its budget back. We all love to blame Hollywood for regurgitating the same old crap and then they actually make the film we want… and it flops at the box office. Hollywood’s not to blame for this, YOU the audience are. Now I’ll admit that I’ve enjoyed the superhero movies up until now, but as far as I’m concerned they ended with Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy and The Avengers. There is nothing else I am interested in seeing in the genre. I don’t mind if we get more comic films, (and we are) but not at the expense of more adult oriented action. Have you all gone soft? Is that what is?

What I don’t get is Safe House made $120 million domestically earlier on this year and it was a pretty decent movie, but Ex 2 was better in every way, with a better cast. So the R-Rating isn’t the problem, so I figure it’s the incident in Aurora that has scared people off from going to theatres. The fact that Paranorman is making nothing at the box office is also very telling. Please people, I implore you, don’t let the actions of a deranged lunatic ruin the theatre going experience. All you’re doing is allowing him to win.

2012 will be remembered as the Summer of Fear.

A lot of media companies and people are jumping on a bandwagon that we shouldn’t make violent movies anymore. Really? Should we ban rock music? Video games? Shakespeare? Pretty sure some of his plays were violent (Macbeth?). Crazy people will do crazy stuff no matter what, so don’t blame movies or Hollywood. Do you really think we’ll get world peace if we ban violent movies? Please, don’t be so naïve.

There is no reason that family oriented movies (Superheroes, cartoons, etc) can’t live side by side with more adult oriented actioners, but when the action fan’s dream movie makes bugger all at the box office then we’ve got ourselves a problem. So this weekend stop hiding behind the couch, grab your wallet and go to the movie theatre and have a good time, that’s what it’s there for after all!
