Mano-A-Mano: JCVD vs. Dolph Lundgren – Universal Soldier (1992)

This is going to be a new regular feature on the site where we can talk about some of our favourite fight scenes and discuss why they work so well. Hope you like it!

Our first Mano-a-mano is between two titans of action; JCVD and Dolph and the final battle at the end of the original Universal Soldier.

We all know that the final fight scene between the hero and villain is the highlight of most action movies; Universal Soldier’s climactic battle is one of my personal favourites just for the sheer adrenaline, but also the way it ends: “You’re discharged, Sarge!”

Luc (JCVD) and Andrew (Dolph) are regenerated soldiers who are given super strength through various muscle enhancers and steroids so they can throw each other about like rag dolls.

The fight isn’t particularly flashy but Dolph portrays Andrew as such a total nutbar that you want him to get his ass kicked so bad.

The two characters just charge at each other with such hatred that it’s difficult not to get emotionally involved. Van Damme does the signature spin kick while Dolph just laughs it off and mocks him: “Well, that’s the spirit soldier!”

The fight looks like Van Damme has no chance of defeating his adversary until he manages to grab the muscle enhancing serum. He rises (in slo-mo) with the fire blazing behind him (hero shot) and then runs at Dolph.

He then proceeds to beat the living hell out of him before throwing him onto a conveniently placed combine harvester and thus giving us the greatest bad guy death of all time. Classic stuff and still gets to me after 20 years.

I grew up watching JCVD, Sly and Arnold destroy bad guys, blow things up and spew one-liners like it's a fashion statement. Action is everything I go to the movies for and the reason I came up with this site is to share my love for the genre with everyone.
