What Skyfall Means To Me

I have great memories of being a small kid and my dad watching a copy of From Russia with Love on the old VCR. His love for 007 is what inspired me to watch my first full Bond film in the summer of 1987, when I caught the quite underrated gem that is The Living Daylights. It was certainly fun, but I wouldn’t say that it was enough to make me a die hard fan. That did however occur two years later when the following film in the franchise was released. Timothy Dalton is widely unappreciated by most Bond fans and Licence to Kill proves his brilliance! Dalton’s “hard edge” James Bond was right up my alley! The following months, I rented all of the earlier films in the collection and was subjected to Roger Moore’s almost slapstick take on 007. This only solidified my opinion that aside from “that guy” that originally played him, there is no better Bond! Licence to Kill still remains my top choice of James Bond films to this day.

When Daniel Craig was announced as the new double-O agent back in 2005, I wasn’t sure how I felt. On one side, Pierce Brosnan had just finished a rather honorable run himself as 007 and oh… by the way, his name is James Bond not “Blond“. But then again, Brosnan did finish his rather honorable run on the rather shameful Die Another Day. So, I was willing to give this new guy the benefit of the doubt. In 2006 we were given one of the best Bond films to date when Casino Royale was released and it was a gigantic plus to see that the choice to return to my kind of “hard edge” Bond was made. Daniel Craig was not the perfect pick for Mr. Bond in my opinion. But, the choice of how to portray him definitely helps his legacy. Quantum of Solace had the misfortune of following Casino Royale, so it was going to be picked on right off the bat. But, because it picked up right where Casino Royale left off, it had some familiarity to it and there were also some rather entertaining action scenes that helped as well.

The James Bond Series is celebrating its 50th Anniversary this weekend by releasing Skyfall, its 23rd installment! No other film franchise has a bigger caliber of success and with Quantum of Solace and Casino Royale becoming the two highest grossing movies in the series respectively, there seems to be nowhere to go but up! When the trailer for Skyfall was released my anticipation and excitement level went from about 00 to 7 immediately! (Yeah, yeah. Sue me.) The return of Q and a few of his little toys was a great start. By the time the beloved (and criminally absent as of late) theme tune kicked in, my finger was already hovering over the mouse button to replay it!  The James Bond Series has always stuck to a familiar formula of “old school” action and it’s films like these that remind me why I started loving movies in the first place.

Tomorrow cannot get here soon enough!

Movies have been a big part of my life since the creation of the VCR. They have always been a way for me to escape. The action genre allowed that feeling more than any other, because the heroes in these films were living in an ordinary world, but were doing extraordinary things. Watching action movies encourages my imagination to explore while I am doing even the most mundane thing and make it exciting. Don't be afraid to use your imagination and keep action alive, no matter how old you get.
