10 of the Best: All Time Greatest Action Heroes

I just realised I’ve never done a list of my ten favourite action stars of all time so I’m going to try and put together a list below. Hope you like it.

1. Sylvester Stallone – It was tough to choose between Arnie and Sly, but Sly never dropped out of action movies for politics; he kept making them even when people stopped watching them. Because of Rambo & The Expendables he has single-handedly kept the action genre alive.

2. Arnold Schwarzenegger – Too many classic films to mention but he really is THE icon of action with so many one-liners and memorable action movie moments. He’s easily the most quoted action hero of them all.

3. Bruce Willis – Die Hard, Last Man Standing, Pulp Fiction, The Last Boy Scout and more. Despite being on autopilot for the past decade Bruno is another action star who has been in too many classic movies to ignore. Die Hard is arguably the greatest action movie of all time and really is the template that all other action movies are measured. Even if he wasn’t in anything else, he’d still be on this list.

4. Jean-Claude Van Damme – My childhood hero; I own practically all of his movies on DVD/Blu Ray and will continue to support his work until my dying day.

5. Jason Statham – He really is THE action star these days and despite not having a breakout hit that has made huge box office, he is one of the most authentic action stars out there. If you spill his pint, he will kick your ass. Fact!

6. Dolph Lundgren – Another childhood hero; Dolph has such a great personality that you just can’t dislike him, even when he’s playing a bad guy. He pretty much never ages and still looks great. Since the new Uni Sol movies and Expendables re-introduced him to modern audiences his career has been going from strength to strength.

7. Clint Eastwood – Not necessarily an action star but his work as Dirty Harry is too important to ignore. He’s the cop that every action hero is based on with his “don’t give a shit” attitude that has been copied many times but never bettered. His work in the Sergio Leone Spaghetti Westerns is also the stuff of legend.

8. Steven Seagal – Sure he may not be quite as cool or thin as he once was but all you need to do is watch Out for Justice, Marked for Death and Above the Law to see Seagal in his prime.

9. Charles Bronson – Death Wish remains the best vigilante movie of them all and is so iconic that (like Bruce Willis), even if he hadn’t been in anything else this earns him a place on the list. The Mechanic, Mr. Majestyk and The Magnificent Seven are all worthy additions to your collection.

10. Bruce Lee – Although he never got to live long enough to enjoy his success, his tragic demise only cemented his name as a legend. Enter the Dragon brought his name to Western audiences and really brought the martial arts genre into the mainstream. Without him there would be no Jet li, Jackie Chan, etc.

Honourable mentions: Scott Adkins. He’s doing a great job of keeping action alive with his martial arts prowess and over the coming years I hope he breaks out and becomes the huge star he deserves to be. Chuck Norris – Although he’s more of a joke these days, there’s no denying that the Chuckster deserves a place on this list for The Delta Force, Missing in Action and Invasion USA movies. All are genuinely enjoyable and essential for all action fans.

I grew up watching JCVD, Sly and Arnold destroy bad guys, blow things up and spew one-liners like it's a fashion statement. Action is everything I go to the movies for and the reason I came up with this site is to share my love for the genre with everyone.
