10 of the Best: JCVD Movies

I’ve been a Jean-Claude Van Damme fan since I was 12 so this is arguably the hardest list I’ve ever had to write, but here goes:

Bonus:  Maximum Risk – This was always a very underrated action movie with some great stunts and Natasha Henstridge flavoured nudity.

10: Double Impact – 2 JCVD’s for the price of one = awesome and this movie still stands up well. He gives a great performance as Chad/Alex making them feel like genuinely different people.

9: The Expendables 2 – Despite the movie’s flaws, Van Damme was the best thing about it and he kicks all kinds of ass as the villain, would have been better if he had more screen time.

8: 6 Bullets – One of Van Damme’s more recent efforts is also one of his best with a genuinely good story and a great performance by Van Damme. Props for killing a bad guy with a glass of acid in the opening scene too.

7: Lionheart – This was the first Van Damme movie I ever saw if I remember correctly and remains one of my favourites. It has a great music score and is sort of Van Damme’s “Rocky”.

6: Bloodsport/Kickboxer – These are joint because I love them both and can’t decide which one I love more.

5: Death Warrant – Another personal favourite, Death Warrant pits Van Damme against Patrick Kilpatrick’s Sandman, one of the all time great action movie villains. Great fight scene at the end.

4: Timecop – A lot of people consider this to be Van Damme’s finest hour and they are probably right. Cool story and something very different for Van Damme back then.

3: Hard Target – Saw this in the cinema 3 times upon its release. Once with my dad and twice with my brother. Amazing action scenes, John Woo’s direction rocks and it has one of the largest body-counts of all time.

2: Sudden Death – This is basically joint number 1 as this is arguably my very favourite Van Damme movie. Extremely tense, great score and Powers Boothe is the most evil person in the entire world in this movie. I love how the action is interspersed with the hockey game adding to the tension. Peter Hyams always brought out the best in Van Damme.

1: Universal Soldier – It was a tough choice but this was the first Van Damme movie I saw on the big screen 20 years ago, wow I’m really old. It wins really for the final fight scene between Dolph and Van Damme. It also has the greatest bad guy death of all time: “You’re discharged… Sarge!”

Honourable mention: Cyborg, Kickboxer, Nowhere to Run, Universal Soldier: Regeneration.

I grew up watching JCVD, Sly and Arnold destroy bad guys, blow things up and spew one-liners like it's a fashion statement. Action is everything I go to the movies for and the reason I came up with this site is to share my love for the genre with everyone. We also want to help promote new talent whether you're making blockbusters, low-budget Indie movies or fan films; if it's action, it's awesome.
