Versus: Aliens (1986) vs. Predator (1987)

We’ve yet to get a decent Alien vs. Predator movie; it seems like such a perfect idea but no one can get it right. So for now, you’ve got 2 classic movies, but which is the better film? Let’s go through the Pros & Cons.

Sigourney Weaver is up there with Sarah Connor in terms of female bad asses. She’s likable, strong, sympathetic and rescues a young girl called Newt from the Aliens.

The marines are awesome, especially Hudson who’s the most likable coward of all time.

Great music score and arguably James Horner’s finest hour.

Spectacular action scenes and the battle between Ripley and the Alien Queen is the stuff of legend.

The Alien Queen looks fantastic and the effects in general are wicked.

The pacing in the first half can get rather tedious and I tend to press “skip” a lot to get to the action, but then I am a cretin.

Even the non-director’s cut feels a little too long and self indulgent in places.

It’s very blue, you ever noticed how Cameron has a fetish for blue?

Can an Alien really operate and fit in an elevator?

Surely Ripley would have been sucked out of the air lock at the end too?

Arnie has never been more badass or looked cooler.

The one-liners are legendary.

The Predator is the greatest alien in movie history.

People get skinned alive and the gore is overall pretty awesome.

Alan Silvestri’s score is militaristic, action movie greatness.

Awesome effects for the Predator, even by today’s standards. The heat vision, invisibility and his cool weapons are just legendary.

Like Aliens, the first half is mostly building tension and is rather slow paced, but this arguably works better, so really it’s not a con at all.

In fact I can’t think of any flaws, Predator is one of my favourite Arnie movies.

AND THE WINNER IS: Big Surprise – PREDATOR, the creature itself is just awesome with his wicked dreadlocks and cool weapons. He can also go invisible and hide in the girl’s changing rooms… admit it, everyone would do that if they could go invisible. Oh, it also has Arnie in his cigar smoking prime, killing baddies and spewing one-liners like a fashion statement.
