10 of the Best: Action Movie Music Scores of 2012

1. The Expendables 2 by Brian Tyler, pretty much the same as the first movie’s score but it’s sheer action movie bombast and few other scores could kick as much ass this year.

2. The Dark Knight Rises by Hans Zimmer; Bane’s chant is legendary and admittedly it took me a while to come around to the music but I now feel that it is the best of The Dark Knight Trilogy’s music.

3. Battleship by Steve Jablonski; The film was a bit of a mess but thankfully Steve’s score was action movie greatness, especially the track “The Art of War”.

4. Wrath of the Titans by Javier Navarrete; although the film has mostly been forgotten I really enjoyed, it but the best thing was the music which was fantastic. Huge choral, orchestral cues and a theme tune which perfectly encapsulates the adventure.

5. Cloud Atlas by Tom Tykwer, Johnny Klimek & Reinhold Heil; To me this is a pretty classic movie score with several memorable and haunting themes throughout. Underrated movie too.

6. Prometheus by Marc Streitenfeld & Harry Gregson-Williams; sparse sci-fi at its best with a great theme and it really helps with creating the other worldly atmosphere.

7. John Carter by Michael Giacchino; sure the film was kinda pants but I loved the theme tune and it has an old-school John Williams vibe. Although it should be noted that Michael should probably stop trying to sound so much like Williams and develop his own sound.

8. The Grey by Michael Streitenfeld; not exactly feelgood music, but it’s incredibly moving and haunting.

9. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey by Howard Shore; although nowhere near as good as the LOTR Trilogy, The Hobbit has enough fabulous music to be highly recommended. Hopefully I’ll get to actually see the movie soon.

10. Dredd by Paul Leonard-Morgan; I previously had The Avengers score on here bit it bothered me because I don’t really rate it. The music to Dredd was awesome though, especially “She’s a Pass” which you really need to walk away from an explosion in slow motion to.
