2013: The Return of Epic Sci-fi?

Over the past few days we’ve had trailers for the Tom Cruise starring Oblivion and the Will Smith starring After Earth. Both are big budget sci-fi head scratchers and I will be there to see both.

After Earth doesn’t look quite as awesome as Oblivion but it has enough interesting visuals and ideas to guarantee my ticket. I also just enjoy Will Smith movies and it’s good to see him back doing something different. It’s directed by M. Night Shyamalan (no, wait come back!) and everyone is wondering, is there going to be a twist at the end? I hope not, despite having a ropey few years I think Shyamalan has a lot of talent and I hope he can make this movie a success.

For a good few years sci-fi had pretty much dried up but with the success of this year’s Prometheus, it showed that audiences are ready for a return to sci-fi epics.

We also have Riddick, the third movie in the popular Vin Diesel series which is meant to be out next year but no date is confirmed yet.

Another awesome looking sci-fi movie is the under the radar The Prototype; check out the trailer below:

Cool huh? So it looks like sci-fi is back and I for one am delighted. What do you think?
