Rumbles in the Jungle

If there’s one thing I love, it’s a movie or action scene set in the jungle. Whether it is Predator, Rambo, Missing in Action or Sniper, there’s something primal about it.

It’s like man being placed back to his very basic instincts where he has to not only face an adversary but also to really commune with (or battle against) nature. There’s a great feeling of claustrophobia and tension during jungle scenes because the threat could be anywhere.

Deadly animals, poisonous plants and insects all add to the peril that is around every corner… or branch as the case may be.

Predator in particular is one of the most tense jungle-set action films because the enemy is literally invisible. When Dutch and his crew are pitted against an alien creature who is hunting them for sport, the fear of the unknown is exacerbated by the surroundings.

The jungle can be your enemy or your ally depending on how you see it or how you have been trained to survive.

In the case of Rambo, the Vietnam vet can use the jungle surroundings as a weapon against his enemies. He struggles to find a place where belongs in the “real” world but he is truly at home when he is in the jungle fighting.

This is also the same for James Braddock from Missing in Action, although he’s not quite as mentally unstable as Rambo, he is at his best when he is fighting his enemies in the jungle.

So many action movies are set in cities (particularly New York) which is all well and good, but for me, you stick a soldier/soldiers in the jungle and you’ve grabbed me from the start.

I grew up watching JCVD, Sly and Arnold destroy bad guys, blow things up and spew one-liners like it's a fashion statement. Action is everything I go to the movies for and the reason I came up with this site is to share my love for the genre with everyone.
