Why The Avengers Was the Biggest Film of 2012

Everyone knows my personal thoughts about the film and we’ve discussed that previously, however there is a reason why The Avengers was such a huge hit: it was “fun”. That’s something Nolan’s films tend to lack, is a sense of fun. His films are dark and moody and you rarely feel happy walking out of the cinema.

With The Avengers, it’s the kind of film that me and Boombata have been talking about for ages: a fun action movie. While every other franchise (Bond, etc) tries to rip-off Nolan’s style by being miserable and lacking any humour, The Avengers had one-liners galore, huge action and lots of humour. It was bright, colourful and people of all ages could find something to enjoy about it.

Who wasn’t in hysterics when the Hulk punched Thor off the screen or when he pimp slapped Loki all over the place? That was one of the show stealing moments of 2012 for me and is why people would keep coming back for multiple viewings.

It has one of the best casts you’ll see in a summer movie and every character gets to have their moment to shine. Comic book fans finally get to see all of these heroes together on screen for the first time and despite the film’s flaws, the acting was excellent with strong performances all round.

It’s not a perfect film but very few are, but it was a perfect summer blockbuster because it does exactly what a summer blockbuster is supposed to do: entertain. I came out of the cinema smiling because I’d just watched something that I had rarely seen since before 2001, a fun action movie.

Perhaps audiences are finally starting to look for more feelgood summer fare and the age of gritty, dark movies can take a back seat for a while. I’m personally fed up with everyone trying to copy Nolan: Yeah, I think he’s great but just leave him to make “Nolan-esque” movies and everyone else just try to make your own style of movies. Joss Whedon did with The Avengers and that’s why it was such a huge success.
