Is Titanic a Worthy Action Film?

I know! I know! The tomatoes?! Not the tomatoes!!!

Over the top antics aside, I know Titanic is considered pretty much as the ultimate chick flick. Gooey romance, DiCaprio, violins, and Celine Dion. Of course, there’s a lot of romance and schmaltz involved in this movie, but I’m here to talk about the second half of the film. The sinking of the ship.

I know disaster movies do qualify for the action genre and I have to say that the sinking of the Titanic in the movie is quite spectacular in terms of action. Yeah, there’s no big explosions, action heroes, and one liners, but for a movie determined to be built on the romance, Cameron brought it in the chaos. The ship itself is still a marvel of visual effects. A perfect blend of practical and CG effects that still hold up to this day. The sinking keeps building and building with a nice load of tension along the way. It is incredibly well shot and puts most disaster scenes to shame.

This was more of a random thought than a well thought out argument. But I want to know what the action community thinks of the “action” section of Titanic? Does it meet up with the action movie standards to deliver? Or does the love story and the other stuff weigh it down?

Omar
My name is Omar and I love action movies. I grew up loving action films thanks in part to my father who would deliver a healthy dose of Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Willis, and Seagal in my movie diet. Ever since then, I continue to love the genre more and more and go along perfectly with my love for the horror genre. What other movie genre can specialize in giving you pure adrenaline and excitement in every turn?
