Sue Me! I Like Godzilla (1998)

I’m not the biggest Godzilla fan out there so I’m not in tune with the outright hatred that this movie gets. However, the movie also gets a ton of hate from all around for simply being a dumb summer blockbuster. And it is. I enjoy it that way.

Ronald Emmerich set out what was pretty much told in the trailers and ads. A monster movie. That’s what we get here. A cheesy, over the top monster movie. Even if you don’t put Godzilla in its place for the monster, it does what it has to do to get the job done. Lizard goes to New York and wrecks stuff up. That’s it. The CG effects are a little iffy nowadays, but they still hold up for its time. The initial scene where Godzilla arrives is great and the subsequent chase scenes especially the ending chase with Godzilla and a taxi. The look of the film works and I even enjoyed the Jurassic Park ripoff scene in Madison Square Garden.

As for the cast, Matthew Broderick does a good job as the lead. He’s a nerdy wimp basically as your action lead. For what its worth, it’s at least different. You have Hank Azaria and he’s good as the comic relief guy. You get a Siskel & Ebert parody in the mayor and his assistant which gives me a chuckle. Jean Reno is just a badass here and is in top form.

I don’t know why it gets so much hate. Yeah, it’s stupid and not really in the spirit of Godzilla, but as a monster movie, it works just fine.

About the Author

Omar
My name is Omar and I love action movies. I grew up loving action films thanks in part to my father who would deliver a healthy dose of Stallone, Schwarzenegger, Willis, and Seagal in my movie diet. Ever since then, I continue to love the genre more and more and go along perfectly with my love for the horror genre. What other movie genre can specialize in giving you pure adrenaline and excitement in every turn?
