Is Michael Bay Really That Bad?

Michael Bay gets a lot of hate, from pretty much everyone actually, and although I can totally understand why, I gotta say that I disagree. Yes, Transformers 2 was pretty bad but lest we forget Mr. Bay directed The Rock which just so happens to be one of the greatest action movies of ALL TIME.

I also have a special place in my heart for Bad Boys although it doesn’t hold a candle to Sean Connery’s action opus.

Today Bay is guilty of the whole quick cut action scenes that I insanely rant about all the time; however The Rock has some of the best action scenes you’ll ever see. That car chase through San Francisco is amazing and the performances are great from Cage and Connery. However, one of my favourite under rated actors has to be William Forsythe playing a rare good guy. This man just eats up the screen he’s so good. Anyone who knows action knows that he was the infamous Richie in Out For Justice.

So I’m a huge fan of the Rock but what of Bay’s other movies? Well I do love the first Transformers movie, the sound effects, the visuals, the score were all pretty top notch and it’s hard to fault it although a little less of the human crap and more robot smashy smashy would be ideal.

TF2 is his weakest movie with an incoherent plot and lame script, don’t get me started on the Twins and Devastators’ gigantic balls. Part 3 was a bit of an improvement with soma spectacular action in the final 40 minutes; the hour beforehand isn’t that great though with more annoying comic relief.

Bay’s most under rated movie though is The Island; I don’t really understand why it wasn’t a massive hit. The action scenes were cool, the score was excellent and it has Scarlett Johansson in it. Rather than an explosion every two seconds it actually has a story and a little characterisation as well.

His other two movies Armageddon & Pearl Harbour, despite pretty weak scripts both have their moments as well. The bombing scene in Harbour was especially effective and a great piece of action cinema, it was just all the stuff between that which was the problem. Bay apparently apologised for Armageddon the other day, why? It was great fun and did what it said on the tin.

A lot of people whine that there is no substance to Bay’s movies…yeah… and? Who cares? If I want substances I’ll go to my local drug dealer.

Not every movie has to be an Oscar winner (thank God) and some movies are just there to entertain.

So no, I don’t think Bay sucks at all; I enjoy his movies and will continue to watch them. He knows how to do great action scenes and I’m also looking forward to Pain & Gain, his long overdue return to R Rated action/comedy. Oh and Transformers 4…
