Action & Horror: Similar Genres?

You may have noticed that I have reviewed a few horror movies of late as well as sticking with classic action, but that’s because sometimes the two genres are very similar. I have always loved horror and action pretty much for the same reasons.

Both usually contain plenty of violence and a lot of the time the two genres crossover like in the Underworld, Predator or Resident Evil movies.

You’ll see that I reviewed The Collection which has horror and action combined; same with Texas Chainsaw which has a great fight at the end between Leatherface and a crooked cop.

So what is it that really separates the two genres? I think the main thing is the characters; you’ll find that the majority of protagonists in the horror genre are just normal people put into extraordinary situations, but for action movies you usually have muscle bound ass-kickers.

Horror movie characters are usually whiny and rather annoying so you can count down until their bloody demise and you almost cheer for the killer. Whereas in action you want the hero to destroy the bad guys and live happily ever after.

The Exploitation era of the 70s and 80s usually combined the two genres too where we have plenty of action but also extreme violence or sex.

As the action genre evolved though, we got the John McClane style hero who was an ordinary guy put through an insane situation… multiple times. The characters have continued to change over the years and both horror and action have more realistic protagonists.

The two genres work best whenever people are forced to fight for their survival in an otherwise unwinnable situation against a sadistic villain. Like John McClane in Die Hard or Rambo in First Blood, it’s all about surviving no matter what the cost.

Don’t worry I’m not about to turn the site into a horror site but I will continue to have the odd horror review as long as it remains relevant.

As much as I wanted to keep The Horror Elite going, I found that it just took too much time at this stage to run two sites; perhaps down the line I will put the site back up but for now I will concentrate on keeping action alive… with the odd chainsaw thrown in for good measure.

I grew up watching JCVD, Sly and Arnold destroy bad guys, blow things up and spew one-liners like it's a fashion statement. Action is everything I go to the movies for and the reason I came up with this site is to share my love for the genre with everyone.
