7 Reasons to be Excited for Expendables 3

I’ve said recently that I have a sneaking suspicion that The Expendables 3 may be the best of the trilogy.

As much as I enjoyed the first two movies, I always felt they could be just that bit better.

The action is fantastic and it’s great to see all our heroes together but I really want a good story too with less self-reverential humour.

Here are my personal 10 reasons as to why I think Expendables 3 just might be the best yet.

1) Mel Gibson as the Villain: Sly has a way of bringing back actors who have maybe had a rough time over the past few years (like JCVD) and giving them another shot. Few people in Hollywood have had a rougher few years than Mel Gibson. Despite whatever issues he may have in real life there is no doubt that Gibbo is a great actor. He is rarely in a bad movie and I believe that Sly will have to really bring his A game for the script for this movie because they’ll have to go some to top Jean Vilain. Sly will battle with Gibbo in the final fight though, so that already guarantees me there on opening night. If Expendables 3 can get a decent script and a good story together as well as spectacular action then it could be one of the all time greats.

2) Wesley Snipes Returns: Like Gibson, Snipes has had a dodgy few years, mostly trying to avoid picking up the soap in prison. But now he is out and Sly is giving him his shot to hit the big time once again.  No word on whether he is a good guy or not but for me Snipes is at his best when he plays a villain. Simon Phoenix is a classic action movie villain and I would love to see him fight Sly once again.

3) Jackie Chan: This is the one reason this movie will make more money than the other 2 Expendables. Jackie Chan has over 30 million Facebook fans alone and even when I posted some fan art for Part 3 featuring Chan the other day, it got over 300 “likes”. The man is hugely popular and international audiences will eat this movie up. I would love to see him fight Jet Li in this movie but if they are both good guys then I guess it may not happen.

Either way, having Chan and his mad cap stunts in this movie is only a bonus.

4) Arnie is Back: Sure he may have had the worst lines in Expendables 2 but there is no doubt that Arnie is the king of action alongside Sly. Both he and Bruce Willis are scheduled to return and watching all of these titans kicking ass on screen again is worth my 12 bucks alone.

5) Dolph to Have a Bigger Role: One of the highlights of both movies so far has been Dolph Lundgren; everyone loves him because he’s just so damn likable. He also has the best lines and has a great fight scene with Jet Li. If you haven’t watched the Extended Cut of Expendables 1 yet then check it out because more Dolph is good for your health.

6) Five “New Guys”: But we don’t know who they are apparently; there are plenty of younger action starts out there who deserve a shot like Darren Shalavi, Cung Le, Daniel Bernhardt, Mykel Shannon Jenkins and more. There are still rumours about Nicolas Cage and Harrison Ford which would be awesome but Cage has denied it twice. I still think Kurt Russell and Dwayne Johnson should be in it too. I thought Seagal was meant to show up but there hasn’t been any further word on it since.

7) The Action: This is what rally matters and Expendables 3 is meant to have the best action yet. Sly recently said they have the best stunt coordinator in the world which means more real action and (hopefully) less CGI. One thing about all of the Expendables movies so far is how wicked the action is. It’s huge in scale; like the harbour bombing in Part 1 or the opening 15 minutes of Part 2. You are guaranteed plenty of shoot-outs, ‘splosions and just good times all round.

So those are my 7 reasons as to why I will be there opening night to support our action heroes. If I see no other movie in 2014 I won’t care, this is all that matters to me. So bring it on Sly and give us something we’ll never forget.
