Friday Fight: Hard Boiled vs. The Killer

I know, this week’s Friday Fight is like choosing which child you love more; these two movies are John Woo’s finest hours (in my opinion) so it sure is a tough choice.

Chow Yun Fat stars in both movies and he has never been cooler, but which one is the best? Let’s find out.

Hard Boiled

Chow Yun Fat stars as Tequila, arguably the coolest cop name of all time who teams up with an undercover cop to bring down a world-class turd of a crime boss. The action in this movie is astounding with some amazing stunts and spectacular shoot outs. It’s also unbelievably violent with a visceral final half hour set in a hospital. This is one of the ballsiest action movies you’ll ever see with civilians being gunned down by the bad guys and urinating babies saving the day. It’s not just constant action though, the friendship between Tequila and Tony (Tony Leung) is well-developed and you genuinely care what happens to them. There is a great tracking shot in the hospital as the two heroes gun their way through the villains which even now is a great piece of directing.

The Killer

In this other John Woo classic Chow Yun Fat plays a hit man called Ah Jong who is riddled with guilt for accidentally blinding a girl during what should have been a routine job. Like Hard Boiled, he inadvertently befriends a cop Li Ying (Danny Lee) who is meant to be stopping him. As usual there is some stunning action, themes of friendship, loyalty and redemption and more bloodshed than a shed… filled with blood. The action however, isn’t quite on the same scale as Hard Boiled as this had a smaller budget. Chow Yun Fat is once again inhumanly cool but he plays a killer with heart to perfection. Danny Lee is also really likable and the banter between he and Chow is awesome.

Verdict

For me I have to say that Hard Boiled is easily the winner; although the Killer is excellent Hard Boiled just has that bit more action and the final 30 minutes have some of the best action you’ll ever see on screen. It also has a urinating baby that can put out fires. Man, I miss John Woo from Hollywood….
