Minority Report: One Of The Most Influential Movies Of All Time?

Although I have never been a huge fan of the Tom Cruise movie Minority Report, it’s hard not to realize the impact it’s had on the world.

I’m not just talking cinematically but how it has actually affected the real world. All of the technology that was at the time science fiction is rapidly becoming science fact.

The largest influence is of course the touch screen computers. At the time everyone thought it was the coolest idea and that it would be great to see such multi-interface technology some day. I don’t think any of us were expecting it within 10 years of the movie’s release.

The only other movie I can think of that has had such a huge influence on technology is Blade Runner. The advertising industry in particular has really followed both of these movies in terms of targeting consumers in new ways.

Check out how Sunset Boulevard & Times Square look today:

In Minority Report when Cruise is walking through a Mall, ads are targeted specifically to him as he walks past. This is already starting in malls around the world where advertising can aim for demographics and consumers.

Look at Facebook; it targets ads at you because of your browsing habits and other social networks are now following suit. Amazon emails me regularly because they noticed that I like action movies (no shit).

It’s actually pretty scary because nothing you do online is secret, so the next time you are looking for something weird online, remember Big Brother is always watching you.

As technology advances, most of what we can only imagine is likely to become a reality. I’m not entirely sure that the pre-cogs will ever happen but apparently the FBI is interested in monitoring social networks to try and prevent future crimes from happening.

It’s not like this is hard to believe considering all the recent controversy about how the government is apparently spying on US citizens.

So even if you don’t love Minority Report, in terms of technology it’s difficult to deny the influence of this movie on the world.
