10 Video Games That Deserve a (Decent) Movie

Ah, the video game adaptation; it seems to be nigh on impossible to get right. There are some stunning video games out there, which have better stories and characters than the majority of blockbuster movies today. So why is it so hard for the movies to be done right? Usually it’s because the filmmakers involved aren’t fans of the games or simply think they can do something better, by trying something different.

What they forget is that the reasons the fans love the games so much is because of what they are. By changing things like story and characters, you usually end up with a poor imitation rather than a faithful adaptation. Anyway, without further ado, here are 10 video games I would personally like to see given the big budget movie treatment.

Uncharted: Pretty much an Indiana Jones movie, but seeing as Harrison Ford is getting pretty creaky these days it might be time to hand the reigns over to another adventurer Nathan Drake: Great action scenes, characters and an involving story make the Uncharted series a potentially great movie. Mark Wahlberg was attached to star and it was to be directed by David O’ Russell but like so many other video game movies, it fell through. No word on if/when we’ll see the movie.

Halo: Arguably the one that everyone has wanted to see; it’s also one of the biggest game series of all time. Peter Jackson’s production company was ready to go with a movie but it just never took off for various reasons. I still think there is a huge audience out there for it so don’t count them out yet.

Shadow of the Colossus: Another one of my all time favourite games; not sure if it could ever work as a movie unless directed by an Asian filmmaker who fully understands the story and atmosphere. Michael Bay need not apply. The story centers on a lone hero called Wander who rides around the landscape on his trusty steed. Armed simply with a sword and bow/arrow, he must kill creatures knows as Colossus to save the one he loves. The one thing which stood out about the game was the music; achingly sad and haunting, the main them will stick with you for days. I would love to hear it put to a live action feature.

Gears of War: This would require a pretty mammoth budget but the story and characters are fantastic and the visuals are literally out of this world. The game primarily focuses on Marcus Fenix, the main character, and Delta Squad, consisting of Dominic “Dom” Santiago, Damon Baird, and Augustus Cole. Side characters, such as Colonel Hoffman, Anthony Carmine, and Lieutenant Kim, also aid Delta Squad. A Men on a Mission style of movie would be pretty cool.

Bioshock: One of the most atmospheric and frankly bizarre games had a movie in development for a spell with Gore Verbinski ready to take the helm. It never happened as the budget was going to be around $200 Million. Considering what a visual game Bioshock is, it doesn’t surprise me that the budget was so high. Hey, it might be worth it if done well. I believe the potential R Rating also killed it.

Castlevania: The SNES version of the game is my all time favourite video game; they essentially did a movie version of it and called it Van Helsing, but I would love to see a new film which is y’know, good. The Belmont family are great characters and to see their battles with the undead & Dracula on the big screen would be pretty epic.

Metal Gear Solid: Interestingly enough Solid Snake’s physique in the first installment was based on Jean-Claude Van Damme, while his facial appearance was based on Christopher Walken. I loved the first game and the story has developed with every new entry in the series. I always pictured Hugh Jackman as Snake but maybe Johnny Strong would be good too.

Batman: Arkham Asylum/City/Origins: Although Batman will now be showing up in Batman vs. Superman in 2015, I still hold out some hope that one day we could see a decent adaptation of these classic games, possibly into a whole new series of movies. The Batman costume is the coolest yet and we get to see all of the best Bat villains too. We’ve had a realistic Batman so how about we get down to some crazy shit? Give us Clayface, Deadshot and Black Mask in a new film series rather than the same old bad guys.

Duke Nukem: To this day, I still have no idea who could play Duke, but in the 90’s I always thought Brian Bosworth or Roddy Piper would have been pretty good at it. The character is a cigar chomping badass but seeing as smoking is now strictly taboo in movies, he’d probably have a lollipop instead. The game was set in the year 1997 so that would have to be changed obviously. The villain was Dr. Proton who was a madman, determined to take over the world with his army of Techbots. Duke Nukem, takes upon the task of stopping him.

Contra: I’m taking it back to the old-school now which is the stuff I played when I was growing up.We always had dreams of Arnie and Sly making a Contra movie but sadly it was never meant to be. Just look at that picture above; it’s clearly Arnie from Predator with another face added. In Contra, the player controls one of two armed military commandos named Bill “Mad Dog” Rizer and Lance “Scorpion” Bean, who are sent on a mission to neutralize a terrorist group called the Red Falcon Organization that is planning to take over the Earth. I would still love to see big budget action-fest of this movie but alas it will probably never happen.

So those are my choices, what games old or new would you like to see made into a live action movie? Will we ever get one that doesn’t suck?
