Who Would You Cast As The New Joker?

the-joker

The controversial casting of Ben Affleck as Batman in the upcoming Batman/Superman movie got fans all riled up saying “Bastards!” and so on. But they were pretty much delighted with the apparent casting of Bryan Cranston as Superman’s nemesis Lex Luthor. It actually ends up that it is indeed only a rumour and Cranston hasn’t been confirmed at all as Luthor, but we’ll see…

There has been another rumour going around (there are a lot going around these days) that Batman’s own big bad The Joker will also be making an appearance, which I would personally love to see.

I know we all loved Heath Ledger’s interpretation of The Joker, but other actors believe it or not are also allowed a chance to play the role.

This isn’t the Nolan Batman universe so we can have someone different in the role who can add their own voice to the Clown Prince of Crime.

There are several actors who could play the role so here are some of my personal favourite choices.

My number one choice is someone whose name you may not recognize but if you saw this summer’s The Purge then you’ll sure know his face: Rhys Wakefield. All you need to do is look at the below photo and you’ll understand my decision. He was incredibly creepy and unsettling in The Purge and frankly one of the only memorable things about the movie. That smile won’t require much in the way of make-up but to me he has the long face and perfect features to really give a great angle to The Joker.

This one is way out there and I can already hear the fanboys screaming “But he’s already Cyclops in the X-Men movies?” My response is, so? Chris Evans was in Fantastic Four and Ben Affleck was Daredevil; Ryan Reynolds has played like 12 different superheroes so it doesn’t really matter. Anyway, James Marsden was in a movie recently; I can’t remember what it was but he smiled and it was a huge Nicholson-esque Joker smile and I thought “hmm, that might be a bit of an interesting choice”. He’s also a good actor and doesn’t get the credit he deserves. He is good in comedy roles too which could help in some nice dark and twisted Joker moments. It’ll never happen but it’s just an idea.

Crispin Glover has long since been a fan favourite but he may be a bit old for the role by now. He really would have been perfect though with the right shape of face, the perfect voice and he can sure as hell bring the creepiness when required (See Willard as an example). Although unlikely to ever happen Glover would be fantastic.

Another name you may not recognize is Alexander Koch but if you watch Under the Dome you’ll know him as Junior Rennie. He has already played crazy with Junior who can be incredibly unsettling one moment and then quite sympathetic the next. He may be too young for the role as yet but the man can act, so if he was cast I wouldn’t complain.

I’ve become a big fan of Adrian Brody over the past few years and with his slightly odd shaped face, he could probably really look the part as The Joker. He’s incredibly versatile and to see him tackle a role like this would be awesome. Like Glover though, he may be too old for the role at this stage.

Several people have mentioned Joseph Gordon Levitt for the role but he looks a bit too much like Ledger; I would like someone who is completely different and will bring something fresh to the role. I think those are my favourite choices, who would you choose?
