I Want a New Buck Rogers Movie!

Bede bede bede! If you’re of the same vintage as me you will know the name Twiki very well. He was the rather sarcastic robot from the 70’s/80’s TV series Buck Rogers. He was also voiced by Mel Blanc who voiced a certain Bugs Bunny.

As a child I loved Twiki and I believe I even dressed up as him for Halloween once; but I digress. The show Buck Rogers in the 25th Century was hugely entertaining and although dated now, I think it’s ripe for a reboot.

Normally I can’t stand the idea of reboots but with today’s technology and a huge back catalogue of Buck Rogers comic strips, you could come up with a fun sci-fi movie again.

Some of the TV show’s storylines were really cool and one in particular I always remember because it reminded me of Terminator, with this cyborg chasing after Buck for the full episode. It was quite tense and the fact that I still remember it after all these years shows what an impact it had.

According to Wikipedia: “The series starred Gil Gerard as Captain William “Buck” Rogers, a United States Air Force and NASA pilot who commands Ranger III, a space shuttle-like ship that is launched in 1987. When his ship flies through a space phenomenon containing a combination of gases, his ship’s life support systems malfunction and he is frozen and left drifting in space for 504 years. By the time he is revived, he finds himself in the 25th century.

There, he learns that the Earth was united following a devastating global nuclear war that occurred in the late 20th century, and is now under the protection of the Earth Defense Directorate, headquartered in New Chicago. The latest threat to Earth comes from the spaceborne armies of the planet Draconia, which is planning an invasion”.

The last I heard Frank Miller was in talks to write a new movie but I hope thy don’t go all dark and gritty with it; the TV show was pure entertainment with plenty of humour and I would very much want to see that again.

I know he’s a fanboy favourite but I kinda picture Nathan Fillion in the role of Buck, but I think because he played a similar character in Firefly then it may not happen. Have I been drinking? Obviously, but dammit all I wanna see a new Buck Rogers movie. If a new movie or TV series happens, who would you cast?
