47 Ronin: Hit or Miss?

Keanu Reeves has already proven himself a legend of action as far as I’m concerned with Speed, Man of Tai Chi, The Matrix and Point Break. He’s not about to win a Best Actor Oscar any time soon and yet he’s always very likable on screen. Man of Tai Chi is one of my favourite movies of this year so imagine how pleased I was when I heard about the Fantasy Action movie 47 Ronin.

The story is as follows: The outcast Kai (Reeves) joins a group of ronin, led by Kuranosuke Oishi (Sanada), who seeks vengeance on Lord Kira (Asano) for killing their master and banishing the group. The ronin embark on a journey with challenges that would defeat most warriors.

47 Ronin has not been without its share of problems with director Carl Erik Rinsch being removed by the studio last year, the addition of a love scene and several script re-writes. According to Indiewire, the movie has been a “nightmare,” with the budget reportedly soaring to $225 million.

It doesn’t really bode well as you just know when you watch it; it’s going to reek of studio interference.

Some of the trailers make it look fun but there is also a lot of dodgy CGI which instantly turns me off. Particularly the dragon/snake thing which just looks a bit dumb. The funny thing is, with a budget so high, why do the effects still look a bit crap?

I’m not sure who the target audience is meant to be but as soon as I see CGI things then I instantly see it being for a younger audience.

It does look very imaginative though and I think it will at least look great on the big screen.

Personally, I will be there to see it when it comes out simply because I am a big fan of Keanu, but I think it will maybe make $20 million in its entire run.

I think it will be a miss; what do you guys think? Hit or miss?
