Sabotage: Hit or Miss?

Arnold Schwarzenegger’s big screen comeback hasn’t exactly been as spectacular as we would have liked… until now. His new actioner Sabotage, which is coming out in April and directed by David Ayer (End of Watch) finally has people excited for a new Ahnuld movie again.

So the big question is, why? What is it about Sabotage that has grabbed audiences more than Escape Plan or The Last Stand?

Personally I think there are several reasons, let’s discuss:

The cast I think is the big selling point of this movie. You’ve got Arnie as the older mentor character and the younger, hipper cast like Sam Worthington, Joe Manganiello, Josh Holloway and Terrence Howard to name but a few. These are for the most part, quality actors and give the movie extra authenticity and a wider appeal. There appears to be some great banter between the crew from the trailers too, so it will be good if we actually care about these guys from the start so when everything starts to go pear-shaped we will be emotionally involved.

The story: Members of an elite DEA task force find themselves being taken down one by one after they rob a drug cartel safe house. That’s just a cool idea and with a team essentially turning on each other, this promises to be extremely tense.

The action: Duh! The action looks great with plenty of shoot-outs and ‘splosions for all the family. Director David Ayer can do a lot with a smaller budget but considering this has a budget of $40 million, I think it’s going to be pretty special.

Arnie: Us old-school action fans will always support The Austrian Oak and he looks incredibly badass in this movie with his tattoos and a more realistic attitude.  Don’t be looking for self-reverential humour here; this looks like it’s going to be a bit grittier than the usual Arnie fare, which frankly is what modern audiences are looking for.

So to conclude, I think Sabotage has “Hit” written all over it; the cast, director and the action are big selling points but the fact that the trailer was one of the most viewed on YouTube a few weeks ago means the general public is interested. Bring on April and Arnie’s REAL comeback!
