The Action Elite Awards: No Love for Arnie, Sly and JCVD?

To say that some of the results of The Action Elite Awards were bizarre is frankly a massive understatement. One of the biggest surprises was the lack of votes for the legendary action stars.

Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger and JCVD got a few votes but really nowhere near as many as I would have thought.

Scott Adkins won because his Facebook Page shared the “Cast Your Votes” page and it really showed how big/loyal his fan base is. Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson and the younger action stars were way ahead of Sly/Arnie in votes so it’s not like it was even close.

Considering we have nearly 25,000 fans, Stallone got around 80 votes for action star of the year. Bullet to the Head, Escape Plan and The Last Stand got about 100 votes each so they weren’t even in the running. If you remember, none of these movies were exactly box office smash hits either so I imagine that’s why they didn’t win.

This is something we’ve pondered often with the recent movies from Arnold/Sly making very little box office (at least domestically). Whenever alleged fans of them didn’t even vote for them, it’s got me wondering if maybe outside of The Expendables films, are they still relevant? Is it just a VERY small minority who are interested in watching them kick ass on the big screen?

I’m personally very excited for Sabotage but I’ve been hearing a lot of people say that Arnold looks too old to be heading up a SWAT team and it lacks credibility. I dunno, it looks pretty awesome to me.

Sly has said that after Ex 3 he’d like to do smaller films like Cop Land and it’s not difficult to see why; he has dedicated his life to action and given himself damaged limbs and bones all for his art, yet his recent movies haven’t been hits at all.

Escape Plan did quite well internationally with a $137,324,564 box office tally but domestically it had an anemic $25 Million.

Jean-Claude Van Damme hadn’t really done much in the last year and few people have seen Enemies Closer or Welcome to the Jungle yet, but frankly neither film was all that great. With any luck Swelter and Pound of Flesh will put him back on fan’s radars again so he gets more love in the 2014 Action Elite Awards.

I was delighted that Adkins won Best Action Star as it appears that fans see him as the future of action, so how about he starts getting bigger roles and he can become more mainstream?

Anyway, congratulations once again to all the winners and thanks to all who voted.
