Hit or Miss

The Expendables 3: Hit or Miss?

But Eoin, surely this is a guaranteed box office hit?!?! Well, let’s just sit back and analyze it first. You all know this is my most anticipated movie of the year and will no doubt end up being my favourite of 2014, but will worldwide audiences feel the same?

Let’s see what it has against it first.

The Expendables 2 made less than the first movie in theatres domestically but it’s international box office made it a bigger hit overall. It also isn’t widely loved by THAT many people, simply because the script was so poor. The saving grace was the action and JCVD.

The third entry in the series has newcomers Wesley Snipes, Robert Davi, Antonio Banderas, Harrison Ford, Kelsey Grammar and Mel Gibson.

Gibson isn’t exactly box office gold these days however and he may put a lot of people off going to see the movie.

Arnold and Sly aren’t the action titans they once were either and with fans barely even voting for them in The Action Elite Awards or their movies from 2013 hardly registering; I’m beginning to worry.

One of the biggest things is the simple fact that the novelty of The Expendables movies may be wearing off with some people; it was great to see all of these legends on screen together and it’s a great piece of nostalgia, but we’ve now seen it twice and the full trailer will have to be pretty damn spectacular to win non-fans over.

OK, so I’ve explored potential negatives for Expendables 3, what does it have in its favour?

Personally, I’m excited for the new cast members like the guys listed above; especially Snipes and seeing him on-screen with Stallone again for the first time since Demolition Man is exciting. I hope Robert Davi plays a total scumbag villain as I love when he’s a bad guy.

We get to see Indiana Jones himself in a big budget action movie so I hope we get to see him blow shit up and he’s not just a CIA type guy.

For this third outing we are also getting a bunch of new/younger cast members like Rhonda Rousey, Kellan Lutz, etc for wider appeal. I think this is a wise decision and will hopefully bring in a more diverse audience.

Having Rhonda Rousey is a nice idea as it may bring in a female demographic too.

It’s a shame we haven’t got Dwayne Johnson though as he is the “Franchise Viagra” after all.

Brian Tyler is returning to score the movie; he scored the first two and created a great theme tune which had a nobility to it which really worked well in how we should feel about these characters. Older, trying to find their place in the world, but overall they are heroes.

Early word from Jason Statham is that it will be “the biggest action movie ever”, promising something really spectacular. I think the action will be awesome and the climactic fight between Sly and Gibbo should be a classic.

The gang is (nearly) all here, only missing Bruce Willis who is too busy being bored. But Dolph, Crews, Li, Statham, Sly, Couture, Arnie and Statham are all returning and that alone guarantees my money opening night.

So will it be a hit or a miss? To be honest I have no idea until I get a better look at a full trailer. For now I think it will be a medium sized hit and make around $300 million internationally with maybe $70 million domestically. If a movie with a talking raccoon makes more money than it then I have lost all hope for mankind.
