Dolph Lundgren Universal Soldier & Rocky IV Double Bill in LA

Yet another reason why I need to move to LA…

“Get ready for a night of epic clashes between cinematic titans as it’s Jean-Claude Van Damme and then Sylvester Stallone VS Dolph Lundgren in Universal Soldier & Rocky IV on the big screen!  Take a trip back to the magnificent 90’s when two European bodybuilding kickboxers could headline a Hollywood studio picture as muscles, machine guns, explosions and one-liners ruled the action film.  Chemical engineer, karate champion and action movie icon Dolph Lundgren joins us on Friday, 6.27 at The Egyptian Theatre in Hollywood to discuss his eclectically inspiring career and future projects.  Trivia, prizes and more!”

Presented by the American Cinematheque, Dammaged Goods, and Humans From Earth

Discussion between films with actor Dolph Lundgren, moderated by Geoff Boucher.

1992, Sony Repertory, 102 min, USA, Dir: Roland Emmerich

Two of the 1990s’ biggest action stars – Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren – do battle in this highly entertaining sci-fi film. Luc Deveraux (Van Damme) and Andrew Scott (Lundgren) are Special Forces operatives shot dead in Vietnam and resurrected by a Pentagon program to create superhuman fighters. The reanimated soldiers are drugged to suppress past memories … but that doesn’t quite erase the fact that Deveraux and a deranged Scott had killed each other.

1985, Park Circus/MGM, 91 min, USA, Dir: Sylvester Stallone

In the biggest box office hit of the ROCKY series, Apollo Creed (Carl Weathers) is killed in the ring by Soviet heavyweight Ivan Drago (a very imposing Dolph Lundgren), and Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) travels to Russia to avenge his old friend’s death in an epic 15-round bout. Made while Cold War tensions were high, ROCKY IV shamelessly waves the U.S. flag, but when James Brown sings “Living in America,” you’ll feel like doing the same.

Screening format: 35mm (UNIVERSAL SOLDIER) and Blu-ray (ROCKY IV)

Head on over to American Cinemateque for tickets.
