To this day Double Impact is one of Jean-Claude Van Damme’s finest hours; it has great action, memorable characters and classic villains. JCVD plays two brothers Chad and Alex and I have to give him major props as he genuinely manages to make them feel like two very different people.
Sure by today’s standards some of the twin scenes don’t look as good but with modern technology I think it could be done pretty much flawlessly.
Which brings me to my point: do we want a sequel to Double Impact? Hell yes!
A few years ago JCVD mentioned that he had a script already written for a sequel.
“I wrote the script with a friend of mine, Sheldon – he [co-wrote] Bloodsport and Double Impact with me. I came up with a great story set in Los Angeles. [Chad] is a producer, making pictures with a big house behind him. Alex is gonna go on vacation and has some problems with the Triads.”
I actually found a more detailed plot below:
Chad is a film producer, making movies for a big company. Alex is going on holiday but has some problems with the Triads, because when Chad was in Hong Kong, he got a loan of money using Alex’s face. Alex then goes to Los Angeles to find Chad and discovers he has gotten a girl pregnant, and that she is the sister of a big boss from South Central.
Sounds good to me, but sadly it doesn’t look like we will see it any time soon. Our friends over at Manly Movie spoke to Sheldon Lettich a few months back and he said: “Sorry, but DI-2 does not appear to be happening.”
Now that’s a damn shame and I really wish Jean-Claude Van Damme could get a break and we could to see him on the big screen again.
I love the idea of seeing Chad and Alex now that they’re older and finding out what they’ve been up to for the past 20 odd years.
Of all of JCVD’s films I think this is the one that deserves a sequel most but sadly it’s unlikely. If it did happen would you be game? I sure would…
