How Jackie Chan Creates “Funny” Action

I stumbled upon this rather interesting video last night which explores how action legend Jackie Chan combines action and comedy so flawlessly.

Tony Zhou spends about 10 minutes going through some of Chan’s films and comparing them to early classics from the likes of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin.

Zhou also lists the 9 principles of action comedy which you can see under the video

The 9 Principles of Action Comedy
1. Start with a DISADVANTAGE
2. Use the ENVIRONMENT
3. Be CLEAR in your shots
4. Action & Reaction in the SAME frame
5. Do as many TAKES as necessary
6. Let the audience feel the RHYTHM
7. In editing, TWO good hits = ONE great hit
8. PAIN is humanizing
9. Earn your FINISH

I grew up watching JCVD, Sly and Arnold destroy bad guys, blow things up and spew one-liners like it's a fashion statement. Action is everything I go to the movies for and the reason I came up with this site is to share my love for the genre with everyone. We also want to help promote new talent whether you're making blockbusters, low-budget Indie movies or fan films; if it's action, it's awesome.
