Our Thoughts on the ‘Wild Card’ Trailer

As you all know the upcoming Jason Statham action thriller Wild Card is a remake of the Burt Reynold’s classic Heat from 1986.

The interesting thing about the new trailer is just what a word-for-word remake it actually is. I thought it would be quite different but practically all of the dialogue is in the 86 movie.

You’ll recognise part of this speech from the trailer: “Well, I’ve been knocked down, blown up, lied to, shit on, shot at, I’m not a virgin except in my heart, nothing much surprises me anymore except what people do to each other. I’m a licensed pilot, I lectured on economics at Yale, and I can memorize the front page of the New York Times in five minutes, and repeat it back to you in five weeks.

I was National Golden Gloves Champion three years in a row and I’m fluent in four languages. And… I lie a lot!”

And my favourite line from the trailer? “I’m not violent… I’m just good at it” which is also in the Burt Reynold’s original.

The trailer starts off with Nick (Statham) losing the money which also happens in the original movie; he was all ready to go to Venice, Italy but got greedy and lost the money.

This looks like it will be pretty much the same too. We see his friend who was assaulted by the “pretty boy” Danny and his thugs; now she wants “his nuts in my hand” which is also exactly like the original.

So there are only a few moments which look new; most importantly Sofia Vergara and her gravity defying bewbs. Literally she is in the trailer for one reason and that’s to take her coat off. Now THAT I definitely don’t remember from Heat.

I was talking with one of my Facebook friends about the movie the other day and we were saying how we hope the opening scene is the same. When Nick is first introduced he comes across as a bullying asshole but it all becomes clear later.

Burt Reynolds just owned the movie Heat; he was effortlessly cool and his character Nick is one of his best.

Personally, I think Statham is the perfect choice to replace him; from what I gather in this new movie, there will be a bit more action and slicker fight scenes. The money shot of the trailer (aside from Sofia) is the slow motion nose breaking which makes me wince every time I see it.

It looks like Michael Angarano will be taking over the character of Cyrus from Peter MacNicol who was great in the role. He made Cyrus pathetic at first but likeable and it looks like Michael will be doing much the same.

So Wild Card looks practically identical to the original movie Heat which very few people actually saw so it’s not really a bad thing that it’s getting remade. Hopefully, it will make people curious to check it out as well as watching Statham busting heads.
