The Best Action Movie Poker Faces

Being a character in an action movie is often a rather thankless task. Russians, aliens, criminals, the undead; every ne’er do well from this planet and beyond is constantly after a piece of your hide, and even if you succeed in obliterating your enemies there’s either a sequel’s worth of enemies coming at you, or you die. As a result, some of pop culture’s favourite action heroes and heroines exhibit a constant poker face. It might be because they don’t want the baddies to get a ride out of their pain, or maybe it’s due to simply becoming resigned to the fact that they’re never going to be thanked for their service? Nevertheless, they adore poker faces, and here are some of the best.

The Terminator – Terminator 2

Although it’s likely that the Terminator’s complete lack of emotion displayed throughout Terminator 2 is due to his being a cyborg engineered to destroy the human race, one has to admire his ability to stay cool even in the most compromising situations. Case in point – “I need your clothes, your boots and your motorcycle” – even when standing completely naked in front of a group of surly bikers the terminator doesn’t even blink. If only we all could display such feats of emotional fortitude!

James Bond – Casino Royale

The re-booted franchise that made Daniel Craig a household name is possibly the most quintessential Poker faced character of all time. Recall the scene towards the end of the film when Bond is strapped to a bottomless chair, completely nude, having his gonads pummeled into oblivion? Somehow Bond manages to keep an astoundingly straight face throughout! Maybe the character had learnt a fair bit during the films casino scenes? Daniel “007” Craig may have even indulged in a little method acting by playing table games at the quintessentially English Mr Smith’s Casino on his smartphone in-between set shoots, as it is said that a lot of actors feel compelled to stay in character as much as possible. To pull off Bond’s cool vibe, you could learn the tricks here yourself too, then if you find yourself in a similar situation to that climatic scene, the pain might look a bit more bearable! It’s certainly a better option than Googling how to become a cyborg or vampire.

Eric Brooks – Blade Trilogy

The protagonist of the Blade trilogy has to deal with a lot of indescribable horrors, and as a result Eric Brooks developed a mighty poker face. Twirling blades around in a manner akin to the Dervish, Brooks still remains to keep a stony glare, never diminishing even as blood and gore erupts all around him.

Ellen Ripley – Alien Franchise

Alone in a space station with cold, unfeeling Xenomorphs tracking her every move, Ellen Ripley really had her work cut out for her. Her response? Stay composed and cool, of course. Even when commanding a powered exoskeleton whilst doing battle with the Alien Queen, Ripley doesn’t really seem to care!
