Nicolas Cage dons the best mullet since Hard Target as our hero Cameron Poe who is forced to hitch a ride home with some convicts as he gets out on parole.
Things don’t go as planned however as the nuts take over the nuthouse and it’s up to Poe to “save the f**kin day”.
So today I thought I’d run through some of my favourite moments from the ludicrously awesome actioner.
Enter the Convicts: I think this is a legendary moment when we first meet Cyrus “The Virus” Grissom, Billy Bedlam and Diamond Dog; we get to find out the crimes they committed and just how evil they are.
Then Cameron Poe steps off the bus and smiles, the wind blowing through his mullet. It’s kind of like a shampoo commercial… except with more criminals.
“Buckle Up!”: The climactic fight between Cameron Poe and Cyrus Grissom is thoroughly satisfying with Grissom dying in one of the most ridiculously satisfying death scenes of all time. Stabbed through the ankle with a broken stick, handcuffed to the truck as it crashes. He then goes flying through the air, smashes through some windows, then falls through some cables where he gets electrocuted and finally on to a random conveyor belt which leads to him getting his head crushed… no sequel for you.
Cy-Onara: No action movie is complete without our hero running in slow motion from an explosion and Con Air is one of the all-time greats. After Cyrus sets fire to Cindino for trying to leave without him, it causes a huge explosion; Poe is trying to find medicine for Baby-O but is interrupted when a fireball approaches and he is forced to run (in slow motion) for cover.
Pretty much every scene with Garland Greene AKA The Marietta Mangler, played perfectly by Steve Buscemi who is genuinely creepy, especially the scene with the little girl. At one point she asks if he’s sick and he says he is but there’s no cure for what he has. But as he leaves her unharmed this begs the question, was he actually cured at the end?
“Well, Baby O, it’s not exactly mai–
“Put the Bunny back in the box” has become an iconic action movie line because of its glorious absurdity; everyone knows the movie is silly… that’s the point. When Billy Bedlam (Nick Chinlund) goes into the belly of the plane to look at everyone’s “personal shit” he finds out that Cameron Poe isn’t the man he thought he was. Poe follows him down and asks him to put said bunny back in the box. He refuses and a short but awesome fight scene ensues complete with THAT theme tune.
“I’m gonna show you God does exist!”… and Cameron Poe be thy name!
This scene is so epically bad ass I could watch it on repeat all day. After his friend Baby-O has been shot by Cyrus “The Virus” Grissom, Cameron Poe holds his friend who begins to go misty eyed.
“All I can think about is like, there ain’t no God… like he don’t exist”
Poe stand up heroically and says THE line and then proceeds to beat the crap out of everyone on the plane.
Oh you’re going to shoot me in the arm? F*ck you, I’m going to punch you repeatedly in the FACE!
So those are some of my top moments from the film and now I feel the urge to watch it tonight.
