Jurassic Park is pretty much in everyone’s all-time favourite movie lists. It has dinosaurs in it… enough said. It went on to make millions at the box office and was followed by The Lost World and Jurassic Park III which were met with lukewarm responses from most fans.
I actually quite enjoyed part 3 because I liked the Spinosaurus and Pterodactyls.
The characters I didn’t really care about and that’s what the first movie did so well; we genuinely liked Alan Grant and Ellie Sadler and when they were in peril we actually felt something.
Jurassic World is the reboot of the series with Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy) taking the lead and Colin Trevorrow on directing duties. The first trailer was quite underwhelming with rather poor special effects and a lot of us wondered why they didn’t look as good as the original Jurassic Park. Since that first teaser, the effects have been polished up and there are a lot of cool ideas in this new addition to the series.
What’s intriguing is that Trevorrow doesn’t look afraid to take some risks with this one; the idea that the vicious Velociraptors could be housetrained irked some at first but I think I like the idea.
The other point of controversy is the new hybrid dinosaur Indominus Rex; did they really need to create a new dinosaur? But that’s really the point of these movies, isn’t it? “They were too busy thinking if they could that they never stopped to wonder if they should”. It’s all about mankind playing God and we all know that everything is going to go pear shaped very quickly so I’m excited to see what this new dino can do.
I also love how the park is now open and the number of people in danger is much larger; there are freed pterodactyls picking people up and dropping them into bigger dinosaur’s mouths, creating a greater sense of threat.
The question is, will it be more of the same? Is it just people being chased by dinosaurs or will there be a greater story going on? All will be revealed soon enough when the film his theatres next week.
There is no doubt about whether this movie will be a success, of course it will; it’s got dinosaurs in it and will probably make nearly a billion dollars, the thing is, just how excited are you to see a fourth entry in a franchise which hasn’t had a new entry since 2003?
I will be there for sure on opening night out of sheer curiosity.
