Well this looks quite exciting! Our friend Rob McLellan, the mastermind behind the incredible short film ABE (soon to be a major motion picture from MGM), has been busy working on this very cool proof of concept Star Wars VR game for Oculus Rift.
Rob tells us ‘This project came about during the development period of ABE, where Craig Stiff (VFX Super on ABE) and I were also doing some work with a games company called HammerheadVR, on a new kind of Sci-Fi drama produced exclusive for the Oculus. With the release of the fracking awesome Star Wars The Force Awakens trailer, we began to toy with the idea of doing a Star Wars experience in VR. Both of us being rabid Star Wars fans, we realized we should only attempt it if we thought we could capture the original joy of the films we grew up with and create something that hopefully felt like you were in the films. So, always looking for an excuse to procrastinate, we went away for a couple of weeks and produced something on our home computers, with a little tech support from HammerheadVR. This trailer is a result of that crazed experiment and, now the both of us suffering with mental exhaustion and sleep deprivation; we want to share it with the fan base.
This is very much a proof of concept. Very early days, but all the footage is running in the game engine… quite frankly even we were surprised with how good it came out. Our hope is that we can develop and complete a working version of the experience in time for the release of the Oculus Rift in early 2016. Though we’d love to get a demo for people to try in the lead up to the movie.’
