Upcoming R Rated Actioners

It’s hard to believe that we’re in July and you’re probably thinking there isn’t much in the way of R rated action coming up over the next few months.

Well you’d be mistaken because there are a few under the radar action movies coming up which are sounding quite awesome.

I thought I’d put together a short(ish) list of movies I’m looking forward to checking out in the next few months.

Kickboxer: Vengeance’s release date is still uncertain out but I’m pretty sure it’s going to be 2016 at this stage.

Bone Tomahawk

Bone Tomahawk is an upcoming Western starring none other than Kurt Russell, Matthew Fox, Patrick Wilson, Michael Paré and Sean Young. The cast alone is enough for me to buy a ticket for opening night but I’m also just a massive fan of the Western genre and I don’t ever want it to die. Word is it’s going to be Hard R too as Russell and co set out in the Wild West to rescue a group of captives from cannibalistic cave dwellers. I’m desperate to see a trailer but I read a script review the other day and it sounds like my type of flick.

Blood Father

I’ve been looking forward to this for what seems like forever but there hasn’t been much hype, probably because of the involvement of Mel Gibson which is a shame as he will always be a badass on screen. It’s based on a book of the same name and I think this gives us a better description of the film.

Plot: “Lydia Jane Carson is a typical teenage runaway who, for the last three years, has been living with friends in the affluent suburbs of western Los Angeles. Ignored by her mother and routinely abused by a seemingly endless procession of stepfathers, Lydia’s existence now consists of aimlessly driving around L.A. with her rich friends, looking for the next high. Her life goes from bad to worse when she meets and falls in love with an older man at a party. At first, Lydia believes that she and the mysterious Jonah Pincerna are “built out of the same pain and anxiety, and that they could heal each other” but she soon realizes that Jonah is a heartless killer with no concern for anyone except himself.
Like a butterfly that has unwittingly flown into a spider’s web, Lydia is soon fully immersed in Jonah’s far-reaching criminal enterprises. When she finds herself part of a violent shakedown and is ordered by Jonah to kill a woman in cold blood, she instead turns the gun on Jonah, pulls the trigger and runs for her life. With no one to turn to, she calls her biological father John Link, a wild Hell’s Angel recently released from prison after serving a sentence for manslaughter. Now sober and running a tattoo parlor out of a trailer in the desert, Link agrees to help his daughter whom he hasn’t seen for more than a decade any way that he can.” Sounds like it could be hardcore and that’s alright in my book. Bring it, Gibbo!

I’m kind of annoyed with this one simply because I write a script with the same title so now I have to rename it Rainbows and Lollipops which just doesn’t have the same ring to it. Anyway, I always love moves about the Mexican drug cartels as they are usually more terrifying than any horror flick.

Plot: In Mexico, Sicario means hitman. In the lawless border area stretching between the U.S. and Mexico, an idealistic FBI agent is enlisted by an elite government task force official to aid in the escalating war against drugs. Led by an enigmatic consultant with a questionable past, the team sets out on a clandestine journey forcing Kate to question everything that she believes in order to survive.

Black Mass

This is more of a gangster movie than an out and out actioner but I consider gangster flicks part of the genre anyway. This looks like Johnny Depp might be back on form as he looks pretty damn scary in this true story of Whitey Bulger; the brother of a state senator and the most infamous violent criminal in the history of South Boston. He became an FBI informant to take down a Mafia family invading his turf. The “funny how” style moment from the trailer harkens back to Goodfellas, which is only a good thing. Without a doubt some gratuitous violence will ensue… count me in.

London Has Fallen

It may have been moved to January but I still have high hopes for this sequel to Olympus Has Fallen; Gerard Butler makes an awesome action hero and the first movie was pretty hardcore.

Plot: The sequel to the worldwide smash hit Olympus Has Fallen begins in London, where the British Prime Minister has passed away under mysterious circumstances. His funeral is a must-attend event for leaders of the western world. But what starts out as the most protected event on earth, turns into a deadly plot to kill the world’s most powerful leaders, devastate every known landmark in the British capital, and unleash a terrifying vision of the future. Only three people have any hope of stopping it: the President of the United States, his formidable secret service head (Gerard Butler), and an English MI-6 agent who rightly trusts no one.

Hopefully this movie ups the ante and has another nasty villain who can be disposed of in an unnecessarily cruel fashion.

War Pigs

I’m not sure if this will be Rated R or not but Dolph Lundgren and Luke Goss don’t star in too many kid’s movies so I think it’s a safe bet that this will have some quality action in it.

Plot: Disgraced World War 2 Army Captain Jack Wosick is given the opportunity for redemption when asked to lead a rag-tag unit of misfits known as the War Pigs on a secret mission to go behind enemy lines to uncover and capture a Nazi developed Super Weapon the V3, a massive artillery canon that would give the Nazis an insurmountable advantage against the Allies. With the help of Captain Hans Picault, a German Anti-Nazi serving with the French Foreign Legion and Colonel AJ Redding, a battle hardened WW1 veteran, Jack must train, lead and earn the respect of his new squad to become a functioning reconnaissance unit.

Close Range

Still no concrete word on when this is actually out but I’m still looking forward to it anyway; it reteams Scott Adkins with Undisputed/Ninja director Isaac Florentine and promises plenty of bone breaking action. The first teaser we got to see (below) was all done in one take and shows that Adkins hasn’t let himself go.

Plot: A rogue soldier turned outlaw is thrust into a relentless fight with a corrupt sheriff, his obedient deputies, and a dangerous drug cartel in order to protect his sister and her young daughter.

Wolf Warrior

Scott Adkins once again stars but this time in Wolf Warrior alongside Wu Jing. The story is about a Chinese special forces soldier with extraordinary marksmanship who is confronted by a group of deadly foreign mercenaries that are hired to assassinate him by a vicious drug lord. It’s been a massive box office hit in China and although it may not be as big in North America,  can’t wait to finally see the finished movie.

SPL 2: A Time for Consequences

Well it loses points for the really crap sub title which I’m sure will be removed for the US release but Tony Jaa takes over from Donnie Yen in this sequel to the 2005 martial arts classic.

Plot: A tough Hong Kong cop Kit busts a major gangster only to find his cover blown and his main witness gone. The gangster in retaliation has him kidnapped and put in a Thai jail with a false criminal identity.

A lowly prison guard Chai with extraordinary fighting skills guards Kit and prevents his escape from prison. The prison guard’s daughter suffers from a rare form of leukemia and Kit is the only donor who can save her. The prison guard discovers Kit’s real identity and helps him to escape in return for his agreeing to save his daughter. Together Kit and Chai must face the gangster and his minions and take them down.

Apparently a third SPL movie has just been green-lit so it will be interesting to see who signs on for it.

Daylight’s End

This is another movie I’ve been talking about for an age; it stars Johnny Strong and Lance Henriksen and it’s directed by William Kaufman (Sinners & Saints). I first saw a trailer last year and we’re still unsure when it will be released but it might be in the next few months.

Plot: Years after a mysterious plague has devastated the planet and turned most of humanity into blood-hungry creatures, a rogue drifter on a vengeful hunt stumbles across a band of survivors in an abandoned police station and reluctantly agrees to help them defend themselves and escape to the sanctuary they so desperately need.

So those are a few choice pics and who knows? There may even be a few more gems we don’t know about yet…
