The sci-fi movie category looks saturated these days. It always mostly centres around superheroes, eye watering CGI graphics and over the top attempts at comedy (looking at you Deadpool!).
It is no surprise therefore that sci-fi buffs are now more focused on seeing movies that they have a personal connection to. In this piece we will take a look at sci-fi movies shot in Vegas. Most of them have casino scenes (some more than others) that remind casino lovers of, for example, the adrenaline rush you get from winning the jackpot in online bingo games.
Mars Attacks is a sci-fi spoof featuring Michael J. Fox. It is the story of a handful of individuals trying to stop an invasion from a group of aliens. At the time of release in 1996, the film received poor reviews, but a few years later, it is a cult classic. Other stars that appear alongside Fox include, Glenn Close, Martin Short and Sarah Jessica Parker. Some of the scenes were shot in and around The Landmark Hotel and Casino, as well as on the Las Vegas Strip.
Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2
Kevin James played the role of Paul Blart, the mall security cop that uncovers and stops a terrorist threat in his mall in the first instalment of Mall Cop. He returned again, in the second instalment where the action was moved to Las Vegas. The movie shows how Paul Blart attempts to stop a major crime at the Wynn Las Vegas. The movie provides an in-depth view of Wynn Las Vegas, and the hotel owner even makes a cameo appearance.
Back to the Future Part II
This is the sequel to arguably the best time travel movie of all time. Unlike the others on this list, there is no obvious link to Las Vegas here. However, if you pay attention to when Marty returns to the alternate version of 1985, you will find that Biff’s casino is very similar to The Plaza in downtown Vegas. Michael J Fox, Christopher Lloyd and Lea Thompson are the main actors.
This disaster movie shows us Las Vegas at the beginning before going on to show us what the city would look like after it is completely destroyed in a doomsday event. The movie sent shudders down the spine of Las Vegas lovers. There is an argument to be made about the movie’s striking semblance to “The Day After Tomorrow” and whether it is a decent watch though. John Cusack, Thandie Newton and Chiwetel Ejiofor are the main stars of this movie.
These are just a few of the movies centred on Vegas. Anyone know of any more? Which is the best?
